After considering the scientific genetic data, phenotypic differences and geography, the GSCO recognized North Altai Argali & High Argali species.
The North Altai Argali have shorter horns with a tighter curl and less flare. The geographic divide of the Khovd River and Tolbo Lake prevent the argali from intermingling. The argali in each area, thus, evolved separately and differently.
