Distribution: Small, scattered populations exist throughout Africa, except in the central Sahara Desert and the tropical forest zone.
Description: A large, slender cat, hollow-backed, with long legs and a small rounded head. The pale yellowish coat is covered with small black spots. There are distinctive black facial stripes from eyes to mouth. The cheetah is the world's fastest land mammal for a short distance, reportedly able to sprint 50-70 mph (80-112 km/h).
